In the southern corner of Arlington County you’ll find the urban village of Shirlington. In its earliest days, Shirlington was no more than just a shopping center for nearby areas. By the 1980s, the area had expanded minimally to include a main street, a few office buildings and a movie theater, but was by no means the metropolis it is today.
Known as Arlington’s “Arts and Entertainment District”, the streets of Shirlington are colorful and alive. Largely mixed-use development, businesses and residences are intermixed. Most residential areas here are condominums and townhomes – there are very few single family homes. The center of Shirlington is occupied by a large retail, service and residential complex known as the Village at Shirlington, which is the same site of the original Shirlington shopping center of the 1940s. Shirlington is also home to many annual events and festivals, from the Wags and Whiskers festival in August to a huge Oktoberfest celebration each Fall.
One thing that distinguishes Shirlington from its neighbors are the prices. Shirlington is not directly Metro accessible which has kept prices lower when compared to Rosslyn and Clarendon – but it’s still an incredibly convenient location to commute from, making Shirlington and up-and-coming popular choice for singles and young families looking for an urban utopia that won’t completely break the budget.
